Our first tomato is ripe.

I am celebrating #Summerrosso on FB and Twitter.

What most people don’t know is that Italians enjoy green tomatoes. Not hard unripe tomatoes, but as in this photograph, not fully ripened tomatoes.

Green tomatoes are used often in salads as they have a nice tang to them.

An Italian doesn’t use they consider a sauce tomato in a salad.

There are a lot of food rules but you can do as you like.
When this tomato turns red, it is perfect to rub on a piece of bread to make pane al pomodoro, the perfect summer merenda ( snack).

We planted several different kinds of tomatoes this year, can’t wait to see which are the best!

Originally from California; Tuscany has been my home since 1984. I found the city of Florence to hold all my passions, food, wine, art all in one place. When I am not in Tuscany, I am often found in Sicily, my other favorite place to be. Always searching for recipes to share and exploring for the guides I write to my favorite cities for food and wine.
